Madhav Nidan: A Classic Ayurvedic Text

Madhav Nidan is one of the most important and authoritative texts on the diagnosis of diseases in Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine from India. It was written by Madhavacharya, a scholar and practitioner of Ayurveda, who lived in the 7th or 8th century CE. The text consists of 79 chapters, covering various diseases and their symptoms, causes, prognosis, and treatment. Madhav Nidan is considered to be a comprehensive and concise guide for the diagnosis of diseases, based on the principles of Ayurveda.

The text is also known as Rogavinischaya (Determination of Diseases) or Nidan Sutra (Aphorisms on Diagnosis). It is divided into two parts: the first part deals with general principles of diagnosis, such as the examination of pulse, urine, stool, tongue, eyes, etc., and the second part deals with specific diseases, such as fever, cough, asthma, diabetes, skin diseases, etc. The text also describes some rare and complex diseases, such as leprosy, elephantiasis, tuberculosis, epilepsy, etc. Madhav Nidan is based on the teachings of earlier Ayurvedic texts, such as Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, but also incorporates some original observations and innovations by Madhavacharya.
